SACO’s top four night owl destinations

Thursday 19 February 2015 by Liam Tullberg As a Night Owl, you're the one sleeping through your alarm after a late night and stumbling down to the nearest greasy spoon for a cooked breakfast!

You like to explore a new city, but you’d rather do it at night and perhaps on a bar crawl! You don’t need sensible shoes or a raincoat, you dress to impress and your aim is to have a good time! You can learn a lot about a city from its nightlife, and going out in a new city is always exciting! We’ve done a round-up of the best places to go out in our Night Owl hotspots!

There are so many places to go out in Manchester it’s hard to know where to start! The Liar’s Club is Manchester’s only Tiki bar and Caribbean rum shop, offering the most extensive collection of rums in the North West, and allowing guests to buy their own bottles and mix at their will! A completely unique experience, and not to be missed!

Black Dog Ballroom, in the Northern Quarter, is a New York inspired speakeasy serving food and cocktails, and hosting regular club nights, with DJs mixing indie-disco, hip hop, soul, funk, disco, house and more until 4 in the morning!

Of course, the nightlife in Manchester wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Canal Street, which is a stone’s throw from our apartments, one of the liveliest areas of Manchester, and is the UK's LGBT centre outside of London. There are so many bars, pubs and clubs it’s hard to choose one that stands out! Lammars, despite not actually being on Canal Street, has won the Pride of Manchester Award for Best Bar two years in a row, and it’s easy to see why!

We’ve had a look at the best places in and around Holborn, so you won’t have to venture too far from your apartment!

Found in a converted public toilet, Cellar Door is one of the more unusual venues for a club! With a cabaret theme, expect decadent decoration, sumptuous cocktails and an entirely unforgettable evening! If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, head to Guanabara, a Brazilian bar with a Carnival theme that features acts and entertainment in the earlier part of the evening. The DJs take to the decks later on playing a mixture of classic carnival beats, samba and current tunes, so you can throw some moves yourself!

If you’re chasing the stars, head to Alley Cat which is found in the basement of the famous Regent Sound Studios. This is where the Rolling Stones recorded their first album, the Kinks made a demo of “You Really Got Me” and a number of other influential artists made their mark. This mellow basement bar hosts a range of live music and DJ sets and is the perfect destination for a night out.

Nottingham is not perhaps the first place that springs to mind for the Night Owls among you, but you’d be wrong! Nottingham has a thriving nightlife, with the classics that are found in most major cities, along with clubs like Stealth which is Nottingham’s number one dance club, boasting a maze of rooms and playing a combination of dance, garage, RnB.

Alongside the major clubs, there are a host of independent venues playing different types of music and showcasing local bands. Rock City is perhaps the most famous of these; an independent nightclub known for its live music, with a focus on indie and alternative music, but with a number of weekly clubnights too.

If you’re after something a little more laid back, head to Coco Tang and start the evening with a cocktail or two. With a host of resident DJs and an impressive cocktail list, you might find yourself not wanting to leave!

Start the night close to home at Nuvo in Brindleyplace for a cocktail or two. Nuvo is known for its unusual and inventive cocktails, and the mixologists are also happy to try new things if you ask! If sitting at the bar doesn’t take yor fancy, you can always reserve a booth for you and your friends.

Broad Street is within walking distance from the apartments and boasts everything from sophisticated canalside bars to major club nights. You could spend the whole night bar-hopping and not have crossed them all off the list – although we don’t recommend trying to! However, there are a few notable ones! For the lovers of pop, Popworld is always a safe bet! Bar Risa is a 4-in-1 offering food, drinks, comedy and a club night, all under the same roof!  Velvet Music Rooms, with its two sound systems, features live music with Birmingham’s most exciting upcoming bands, to club classics and urban anthems, so there’s always variety!

Let us know if we’ve missed out your favourite club or bar! Don't forget if you've not already taken our quiz it can be found here.
