What’s on in Birmingham this festive season

Frankfurt Christmas Market

This delightful Christmas market is the perfect place to go if you’re seeking a bit of festive cheer to get into the spirit. The Frankfurt Christmas market is the centrepiece of the city during the season and as its been running for 15 years, its sure to be a success. With live music, stalls offering all sorts of trinkets to buy, and of course delicious food and mulled wine – The Frankfurt Christmas Market is not to be missed when visiting Birmingham.

The markets will be held at Victoria Square in the city centre from the 18th of November until the 29th of December, and entry is free.

Birmingham ‘Back to Backs’ tours

‘Back to backs’ are the city’s historic houses, literally positioned back to back surrounding a courtyard. These carefully restored, atmospheric 19th-century buildings are an impeccable insight into the lives of working people in olden-day Brum, and these guided tours are not to be missed if you are interested in the city’s history. With lit fires and the sounds and smells of the past, Birmingham’s back to back tours provide an exciting day out - and of course don’t forget to visit the gift and 1930s sweet shop.

Tours run from the 18th of November to the 22nd of December, and prices cost £7.85 for adults and £4.55 for children.

George’s Marvellous Medicine at The New Alexandra

The Birmingham stage company presents George’s Marvellous Medicine, the Roald Dahl classic about a boy who concocts a terrifying potion for his grandmother, with hilarious consequences. Guaranteed to make you laugh, this show is a must see for any families seeking out some giggles over the festive period.

The show runs at the New Alexandra Theatre from the 22nd of November until the 3rd of December, with tickets costing from £22.90.

The Birmingham National Sea Life Centre

On a rainy day, or any for that matter, why not take a trip to see the underwater creatures at Birmingham’s Sea Life Centre. See everything from rare species to the bright and colourful, whether it’s the corals and anemones or the sharks and penguins – there’s something sure to wow everyone. And who said that sea life wasn’t festive? From the 26th of November until the 23rd of December kids can visit Santa and receive a free gift!

The Sea Life Centre in Birmingham is open every day from 10am and last entry is at 4pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends. Ticket prices are from £12.95.

The All That Glitters craft exhibition at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists presents the All That Glitters exhibition, a range of affordable trinkets perfect for that alternative Christmas gift you were looking for. Who doesn’t love a glamourous necklace or subtly shiny ring as a festive present? Make a day of it if you visit this dazzling exhibition this season.

The craft exhibition is held at the RBSA until the 21st of January and is open from 10am until 5pm each day, and entry is free.

The Nutcracker at Birmingham Hippodrome

Part of the city’s festive traditions for over 25 years, the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s production of this timeless classic will surely stun you. The story explores a winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes, toy soldiers and of course, a sugar plum fairy. This classic production is claimed as one of the best in the world, and impeccable dancing, beautiful costumes and lavish sets will deliver you a Christmas treat for everyone to enjoy.

Take the family to see this stunning performance from the 25th of November until the 13th of December, with tickets costing from £19.
