Where to Find the Best Flipping Pancakes in the UK

Friday 21 February 2020 by Jodie Alker Holy Crêpe we’re excited! If you haven’t heard, Shrove Tuesday (or as it’s otherwise known, Pancake Day) is just around the corner, and it’s coming with a full force of sugar. Whether you like the traditional lemon and sugar on your stack, mixing it up with chocolate and strawberries or going crazy with your own invention, this is the day to embrace over-indulgence. Pancake Day may not be something you usually make a fuss over, but oh has the Pancake game changed in the past few years. Read on to see what some of the best restaurants and cafes around the UK are serving up with a pour, stir and a flip for you to enjoy this Pancake Day.

Avobar

Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London

Stack of avocado pancakes

Looking for somewhere to fill your belly and your Instagram feed with nutritional goodness? Avobar is the place! Avobar is celebrating Pancake Day in their own hipster way whilst reaching some serious pancake goals. Think thick American-style wedges of pancakes with an added shot of matcha, then either top this incredible dish off with their house-cured salmon, a turmeric poached egg and avo butter, or go simple with some melted avo-butter, a caramelised banana and a healthy pour of maple syrup. Perfect for those attempting to bypass the chocolate and sugar overload this year, this quirky restaurants offers a healthier (albeit, only slightly) way to enjoy Pancake Day.

Mud Dock

The Grove, Bristol

Inside of Mud Dock Cafe in Bristol

Sit looking over Bristol Harbourside and take in some gorgeous views on the top of a bike shop. Yes, a bike shop - and it’s known as being very iconic and a highly recommended place to visit in Bristol, we’ll have you know! Other than offering a wealth of knowledge on cycling, they also have a delightful café above the shop with a great terrace for people watching and soaking in the occasional British sun. Taking a simple approach to this sweet treat-based Tuesday, Mud Dock café is offering some delicious buttermilk pancakes with lashings of maple syrup, braised apple and salted caramel or Nutella, banana and hazelnut. Enjoy these in the morning with a cup of coffee whilst watching the ferries come into the harbour, or spend the afternoon on their terrace with friends making your way through their different delicious treats over a glass of pinot grigio.

Harvey Nichols

Wharfside St, Birmingham

All you can eat pancakes with an array of toppings

Add some all-you-can-eat pancakes to your Pancake Day shopping trip to make for the perfect Tuesday afternoon. This year, Harvey Nichols is challenging customers to see how many of their pancakes they can eat in one sitting - for most of us, that’s more than we’d like to admit. Another great thing about this is that you can try as many variations of toppings as you want: yoghurt and berries, chocolate and bananas or walnuts, apples and oranges with a healthy pour of syrup. They have also partnered up with StreetSmart, a charity who fundraise for the homeless with the support of some of the UK’s top restaurants, so you can enjoy your pancakes knowing your custom is helping others at the same time.

Where the Pancakes Are

Southwark Bridge Road, London

Yorkshire pudding pancake

Did the name give it away? As you may have guessed, this is where the pancakes are, and they have all the topping medleys to excite your little dessert stomachs. They are exploring different ways to present the traditional pancake, so whether you’re looking for sweet, savoury or just different (pulled beef pastrami, anyone?), these guys can certainly provide. Gluten, vegan and dairy-free diet requirements are also catered for here. They are also putting a pop-up pancake stall in the Flat Iron Square just for this special day so you can find them with ease. One thing we can guarantee - Where the Pancakes Are will be quite an experience this Pancake Day. We’d recommend making a day of it and accompanying your pancake dish with a specialist beverage from their menu, such as mulled pear, ginger and rum cocktail.

The Garden

Ashley Road, Manchester

Pancake platter from The Garden

For those looking for a wholesome alternative to this famously high sugar and high carb day, The Garden in Hale has made, for one day only, a pancake platter. It contains buckwheat pancakes accompanied by one side of sweet toppings such as fresh fruit, coconut yoghurt, nuts and maple syrup, and savoury treats such as scrambled tofu, kale, tempeh and mushrooms on the other. After you’ve filled your stomach, wash down this spectacular array of food with one of their signature lattes - either turmeric, beetroot or activated charcoal. Their focus has always been on seasonal, organic and local produce and just basically being healthy in every way. They even have a yoga studio, so it’s safe to say they’ve covered all the wholesomeness you can possibly have!

The Friary

Friar Gate, Derby

Very high stack of pancakes

The Friary is very excited about this day and they want everyone to enjoy it just as much as they do in the best way they can, so they are offering pancakes on Shrove Tuesday for just 25p each – what a bargain! Grab your friends, your family, your dog or your cat and fill your face with as many circles of joy as you can. A great place to spend part of your day whilst in Derby, especially if you don’t mind being surrounded by some rather famished students. You can fill up on some buttery goodness and then spend the rest of your afternoon strolling around the beautiful streets of Derby to walk it all off.
